Rufford Exhibition – Southwell Minster from the Recreation Ground

Susan Isaac – Southwell Minster from the Recreation Ground

This is the fifth & final painting in the Rufford exhibition, again of Southwell Minster. In the spring, before new leaves have unfurled, soft and fragile pink blossoms make a striking contrast against sharply defined trees, whose dark plum branches fracture the early morning pastel lemon sky. The pale atmosphere is striated by these organic linear forms. Their open tracery creates an interesting counterpoint to the solidity of the Minster stonework.

Rufford Exhibition – Newark Market Place

Susan Isaac - Newark Market Place

Susan Isaac – Newark Market Place

A deep summer blue pervades this composition depicting Newark’s market place. The red and white checkerboard of market stalls transforms the square on several days of the week. By the end of the afternoon, human activity is much reduced and the area has fallen into shadows which are saturated through with bright blues and pinks.

An exaggerated rectangular canvas emphasises the importance of the Church of St Mary Magdelene in Newark’s townscape. The gentle pinnacles of the market stalls graduate up to the street lamp which in turn echoes the form of the spire.

The painting is in the Open Studios Notts exhibition at the gallery at Rufford Country Park until 9 June.

Rufford Exhibition – Southwell Minster from Squire’s Pond

In this composition, I was particularly playing with lemon yellows and enjoying the contrast of dark mauve field boundaries that zigzag through it.  Squire’s Pond and a spring time ‘forget-me-not’ sky create another complimentary layer of colour interest. Southwell Minster is confined to a suggestion of its roof lines.

The painting is at the gallery at Rufford until 9 June, in the Open Studios Notts exhibition.

Rufford Exhibition – Church Gardens, Newark-on-Trent

This second Rufford exhibition painting is of the St Mary’s Church Gardens at Newark-on-Trent.

The brightening atmosphere of a November afternoon, following a  shower of rain, created wonderful reflections on the silvered paving stones in the foreground. Subtle grey/blues were mirrored from the sky as was the shard of the Church spire.

I wanted to be very restrained in my use of colours and was pleased with this simple juxtaposition of the many tinted greys with the green of the vegetation.

Rufford Exhibition – Southwell Minster from Bishop’s Drive

I wanted to say a little more about the five paintings I have in the Open Studios Notts exhibition at Rufford.  In this winter view of Southwell Minster the open gateway of the Bishops residence invites the passerby to stop and gaze at one of the loveliest and most complete views of the Minster. From this vantage point, before trees take on their summer mantel, the entrance gate and the gate-post offer stepping stones up toward the pepper-pot spires.

‘Open Studios Notts’ Exhibition at Rufford Craft Centre

I have a group of paintings in the  “Open Studios Notts Exhibition” at the gallery in Rufford Park, with its preview this Sunday 5 May (and then running 6 May to  June). I thought it appropriate that they should be relating to Nottinghamshire and am showing views of Newark and Southwell.

Southwell Minster is an unexpected gem within the landscape of the county – with its remarkably intact Anglo-Norman features and distinctive, widely visible ‘pepper-pot’ spires.

Newark-on-Trent is perhaps even less expected but has an equally rich and visible architectural history. The ruined castle, lying alongside the River Trent and noted for its role in the Civil War, still dominates the north-western approach to the town and has been the subject of many paintings by local and visiting artists (including Turner who painted it following one of his early tours of British regions in 1794 when he was 19).

It also has a beautiful spacious town square,  where brightly coloured markets are looked over by mostly Georgian buildings plus a sprinkling of Medieval timber-framing and with the fourteenth-century church tower & spire standing sentinel-like over its north side.

O3 Gallery – ‘City & Shoreline’ Conclusion

Following on from the end of my ‘City & Shoreline’ exhibition at the O3 Gallery in Oxford – I really enjoyed the opportunity to work on two very different but equally inspiring areas of Britain and to show them in one exhibition. We have such rich and exquisite landscapes to draw on in the British Isles.  Many thanks to Helen Statham and her team at the O3 gallery for the exhibition opportunity – thank you to them also for presenting the paintings so beautifully and for making the event run smoothly from start to finish.

O3 Gallery – Polperro Harbour

The reflective nature of water and the patterns of a variety of boat forms give visual excitement whatever the weather.

Susan Isaac – Polperro Harbour

This last O3 Gallery painting is of Polperro Harbour when the light had a silvery glint to it, a point in time when the rain had recently lifted. Although the tonal nature of the painting still suggests a minor key, the sun is waiting in the wings. In the foreground, the overlapping boats set up a gently rocking rhythm of forms. They fan about the harbour so that the eye drifts towards the scatter of cottages and the curious backbone of the reclining stretch of land.

O3 Gallery – Magdalen Tower & Bridge, Oxford

This last Oxford view of the O3 exhibition paintings is actually one of the first views that I discovered in Oxford, whilst exploring one of its many green areas.

On the banks of the River Cherwell, next to the Magdalen Bridge looking across to the Magdalen Tower, was this arrangement of elements that gave me the opportunity to play with reflection. Fine branches whip the air creating a screen of tracery over the sky. It was late Autumn and the last of the foliage had fallen and was floating in the water like pieces of gold leaf.

O3 Gallery – Harbour Wall and Chapel Hill, Polperro

Susan Isaac - Harbour Wall and Chapel Hill, Polperro

Susan Isaac – Harbour Wall and Chapel Hill, Polperro

Although Polperro does not have grand architecture, the array of lovely vernacular cottages lining its topography are very appealing. In this composition there is also a distinctive little grouping of trees breaking the horizon line.  I liked the way in which the white-washed houses stood out sharply against the darkening backdrop of land, seeming to gaze out to open seas, whilst in the lower part of the painting a panoply of fishing boats looked up in deference towards them.
