A deep summer blue pervades this composition depicting Newark’s market place. The red and white checkerboard of market stalls transforms the square on several days of the week. By the end of the afternoon, human activity is much reduced and the area has fallen into shadows which are saturated through with bright blues and pinks.
An exaggerated rectangular canvas emphasises the importance of the Church of St Mary Magdelene in Newark’s townscape. The gentle pinnacles of the market stalls graduate up to the street lamp which in turn echoes the form of the spire.
The painting is in the Open Studios Notts exhibition at the gallery at Rufford Country Park until 9 June.
