Excited to say I had 4 works selected as part of this 'Auction of Contemporary Investment Art (curated by @chinwerussellart)' with @chalkwellauctions - due to take place on Tuesday 9 March, 2021 at 6:30pm. Auction catalogue is live on the websites of @chalkwellauctions and @the_saleroom - my profile is at lot 77 with my works at lots 78-81.Lovely to be part of a celebratory exhibition by @scarthinbooks of Cromford. Looking forward to being able to drop by this unique independent bookshop on the edge of the Peaks in the hopefully not too distant future. I've really missed visits to Scarthin Books over these last 12 months and couldn't resist offering up a painting for their Lockdown Art Competition. Even more delighted to have it selected for an 'honourable mention' alongside so many splendid submitted works.Just finished framing this Cambridge triptych which is off to its new owner shortly - 'Lutyens Bridge from Laundress Green, Cambridge'. It was completed in an afternoon session as part of a Paint Out Cambridge event along the river Cam. I became interested in a sliver of water trapped between the #Lutyens Bridge and the parapet wall of the weir bridge, seen from Laundress Green. This is also one of the punt stations on the river and a popular grassy area to sit as well as a watering hole with the @anchorcambridge pub nearby – its white walls cut into the dark tones of the view from the right. People were quite interested to see what I was doing and in particular I was visited repeatedly by a friendly fellow who closely resembled a character from a Terry Pratchett novel.Looking back and looking forward again - this is from a field trip in the ‘before times’. I am so missing the freedom of a spontaneous day trip to beautiful locations such as the Peak District. It can be physically testing to convey too much around this rugged 'Duke of Edinburgh Award' terrain, and so watercolour sketching is often my medium of choice. The two sketches are of the Stepping Stones at Dovedale and a view above Milldale. Each one measures approx 27x46cm and is available at £280 unframed + p&p.This was the oil painting of Charlestown Harbour that emerged from the first sketch in my last post.

Paint Out Norfolk 2020 – Day 4 (Cromer)
The weather forecast for Sunday (19 July) was unpromising but we were bidden to various parts of the coast regardless. I chose Cromer, arriving in inclement conditions, donning wet weather clothing and set off around the town to find an … Continue reading

Paint Out Norfolk 2020 – Day 2 (Winterton-on-Sea)
Today we journeyed east (from Norwich) and found ourselves amongst the sand dunes and marram grass of Winterton on Sea. I arrived early, before the beach car park opened for business and (parking temporarily in the village) set off to … Continue reading

Staithes Beck from North Side
Compositionally here, in this final Staithes view, my primary interest was in the dynamic procession of post and rail, springing diagonally from the foreground and branching off in the distance of the painting. The starkness I found came in part … Continue reading

Staithes Beck & Footbridge
This Staithes painting revolves around the footbridge over the Beck and in particular, the upright form of its nearside buttress. A bright and briskly sunny day enhanced the shadows and highlighted the roughly textured courses of masonry and cobbles. This … Continue reading

Staithes from the Beck
I enjoyed playing with the complimenting colours of blues and oranges in this composition. The foreground boat, held in suspension by its web of moorings, set the key hue of orange, tints of which are echoed in the silted estuary, … Continue reading

The Slipway at Beckside, Staithes
This stretch of wharfage lies along the upper reaches of the Staithes estuary. I found here a spiralling accumulation of compositional elements. In the foreground, reaching from the right, a cobbled boat-slide sweeps underneath moored fishing boats, lying at angles … Continue reading

Cowbar Nab at Staithes
I recently completed a new series of Staithes paintings, that are now in the Staithes Gallery and wanted to write a little about them. In this first work, the monumental land mass of Cowbar Nab dominates this view of Staithes … Continue reading
