Oxford

My paintings of Oxford and Cambridge initially arose from trips to visit my daughters in their student days – and I have continued to visit. These university towns are similar for a richness of architectural beauty and imbued with cultural significance. Entering the historic interior of each town inspires a curious and overwhelming sense of familiarity, reverence, and nostalgia. Yet each projects quite particular identity in terms of textures, palate of colour and spatial arrangements.

Oxford with its predominant use of pale stone, has a more open, unified and bolder feel, spread as it is over a wider area, and more infiltrated by the modern era.
