Oil on canvas (76x76cm)
Ref 1057 – SOLD
This was the submission painting that gained me entry into into Series 10 of Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year, broadcast in 2025.
This view looks along Senate House Passage in Cambridge, where one of my daughters was a student. I loved exploring these slightly off the beaten track shady views of its historic buildings. Scrutinizing historic architecture has been a constant in my professional life & this view exemplifies my fascination. The roughly built & patched brickwork of Gonville & Caius faces the polite classical Portland stone façade of Senate House whilst roof profiles in a variety of cool tones make interesting arrangements against a warmly lit sky. A patchwork of flagstones & cobbles gives opportunities for texture.
I’m fascinated by bas-relief possibilities for creating an image – from medieval wood & stone carved panels to Anselm Kiefer’s highly textured work. I sometimes incorporate materials such as ground minerals into layers of paint, working over the surface with a palette knife more often than a brush & use texture in helping to convey a sense of perspective in my ‘tipped up’ picture plane.
