My submission piece for Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year Series 6 (I wasn’t selected for a pod, but took part as a ‘Wildcard’ artist).
This painting was made at home at the outset of lockdown. It’s the old ‘crew yard’, next to a former threshing barn on our farm, where we held a ceilidh for our eldest daughter’s wedding reception last year.
Unable to travel at this time, I was looking for something of interest to substitute for a more conventional landscape painting. I also liked the potential for variety in further studies through the ever-changing washing line. I am always struck here on sunny days by the way that light diffuses through the clothing and changing patterns of shadow are cast on the crew yard floor.
It was an experimental painting in which I was exploring how to create a composition with greater efficiency. I worked in situ, making a tonal under-drawing, before picking out some of the areas with impasto paint applied with a palette knife to give greater emphasis and life to certain features.
