West Cornwall

I began visiting Cornwall again in the 2000s, with distant memories of my own childhood holidays when we travelled there most summers from South Wales. Its geographic remoteness, then as now, added to its air of other worldliness, whilst at the same time, as a Welsh child, there was a curious familiarity about the place names, although not their pronunciation, hinting at a common Celtic ancestry.

As a painter I enjoy observing everywhere the particular colour juxtapositions – deep aqua blue seas, against palest silvery mauve granite of buildings and rocky outcrops, more often than not overlain with a deep saffron-coloured lichen. I always enjoy visiting and revisiting to absorb and endeavour to portray something of what I have found there.
